You still can not use fluoride toothpaste and the grooming is done with a damp gauze.

Your baby’s oral health care ideally starts with the prenatal recommendations for dads. The first visit to the dentist should be carried out at six months of age and coinciding with the eruption of the first tooth, should not wait until twelve months of age.

In the clinical history, the dentist must record the medical and oral histories, which take into account the prenatal, perinatal and postnatal periods of the patient. Also in that first appointment he makes a complete oral clinical examination.

Part of this first evaluation is to establish the risks that may exist to develop dental and oral diseases and to determine appropriate reevaluation periods, which are usually given every six months.

The main recommendations for your child’s dental care are:

  • Before the eruption of the first temporary teeth, it is suggested to use gum stimulators, which desensitize the baby’s mouth, allowing the introduction of instruments that facilitate the acceptance of oral cleaning later.
  • You can start using these stimulators from three months until the first teeth appear.
  • Once the first dentition comes out you should clean with a clean, moistened gauze after each meal, which helps to remove bacterial plaque.
  • When you erupt the first temporary tooth you can also start induction by brushing without toothpaste, twice a day. The cream can only be used up to three years of age.
  • The oral hygiene of babies begins even before the first tooth appears, but it will be around the age of two when we start using a toothpaste to brush our teeth. The most suitable toothpaste for young children has to be without fluoride. That way we avoid the risks of the little ones swallowing the cream.
  • In children less than six years of age, excess fluoride may cause mild fluorosis, an abnormality of the oral cavity, especially of dental pieces, where blemishes may appear, even with long-term effects. The intake of fluoride in young children could result in the definitive teeth coming out with specks or discolored.
  • That’s why it’s best to use special children’s toothpastes, made with natural ingredients and without fluoride. Always read the composition and use tips to check that they specifically indicate that they are tailored for the baby’s prompt intake.
  • Between 12 and 18 months you can start using a special toothbrush for children, and from the age of 2 we can introduce a small amount of toothpaste.
  • Remember that they most likely end up swallowing the toothpaste, out of curiosity and because they also do not know how to spit, so the amount of toothpaste must be minimal, even if it contains no fluoride.
  • Gradually you can increase the amount of toothpaste, although the important thing is not the amount (rather it is to make the brushing of teeth more attractive to the children), but the quality and the frequency of the brushing. Finally, after the age of six, when they begin to have definitive teeth, do not swallow the toothpaste and have improved the technique of brushing with our help and supervision, can use without problems fluoride toothpastes that incorporate the Anticaries action.
  • Scalping teeth gnaws relieve the itching discomfort caused by the release of temporary teeth and are used approximately between the fourth and eighth month of age.
  • Babies imitate what parents do. To start the first steps in the brushing it is important that one of the dads is brushed in his presence so that he knows how to do it.
